The Phoenix Brooch holds deep cultural significance, as the phoenix in ancient Asian royal traditions symbolized the empress or women of the imperial family. Paired with the dragon, representing the emperor, it embodies the concept of “Long Feng Cheng Xiang” (Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity), symbolizing harmony between yin and yang, as well as the perfect balance of nature. It also represents beautiful love and harmonious marriages.
Known as the “bird of five virtues” in ancient China, the phoenix was believed to embody the qualities of ren (benevolence), yi (righteousness), li (propriety), zhi (wisdom), and xin (faithfulness), signifying noble character and moral excellence.
This brooch features traditional Chinese hua si (filigree inlay) and lei si (piled wire) techniques, as well as the dian cui method. While phoenix designs are traditionally crafted as hairpins, I have reimagined this piece as a brooch to enhance its practicality and versatility. It is crafted with a silver base plated in gold and adorned with pearls, apatite, and tanzanite, making it both elegant and symbolic.

The “Oriental Palace on the Sea” brooch is a unique creation, notable for my use of the traditional raden technique for decoration. Originating in China and later flourishing in Japan, raden is most commonly seen in the form of inlaid mother-of-pearl decorations on black or deep red lacquerware boxes, where the iridescent colors of the shell beautifully contrast against the dark background. I have incorporated this technique into my work to convey the elegance of a palace. Additionally, I used the Chinese technique of diancui, embedding feathers and pearls to enhance the ornamentation. With a silver base plated in gold, this piece radiates a sense of opulence and grandeur.

The body parts are the most time-consuming work because they are hollowed, and it’s really testing my soldering skills! The thinnest silver wire in this work is only 0.08mm!
